Introduction

Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) plays a critical role in economic transformation, rural livelihoods, mineral value chains, and sustainable development across Africa and other emerging economies. However, the sector continues to face governance challenges linked to environmental degradation, illegal mining, occupational health and safety risks, child labor, gender inequality, weak regulatory compliance, climate vulnerability, and limited access to formal markets and finance. Artisanal & Small-Scale Mining (ASM) Governance Training Course is designed to strengthen institutional capacity, promote responsible mining governance, and equip stakeholders with practical tools for inclusive mineral resource management, ESG compliance, community engagement, and sustainable ASM formalization strategies.

The course integrates global best practices, digital governance systems, responsible sourcing frameworks, environmental stewardship, climate-smart mining approaches, and social accountability mechanisms to support resilient and transparent ASM ecosystems. Participants will gain practical knowledge on mining policy development, conflict-sensitive resource governance, mineral traceability, stakeholder collaboration, human rights due diligence, green mining innovation, and local economic empowerment. Through interactive learning, policy simulations, and real-world case studies, the training aims to build competent professionals capable of driving sustainable, transparent, and inclusive artisanal mining governance in line with SDGs, African Mining Vision (AMV), ESG standards, and responsible mineral supply chain initiatives.
