Introduction

Hydrogen Investment and Financing Training Course provides a practical, market-focused understanding of how capital is mobilised, structured, evaluated, and deployed across the rapidly evolving hydrogen economy. The course examines green hydrogen, low-emissions hydrogen, electrolyser projects, renewable energy integration, hydrogen derivatives, ammonia, hydrogen infrastructure, project finance, blended finance, ESG, climate finance, bankability, risk allocation, offtake agreements, and investment decision-making. With global capital spending on low-emissions hydrogen projects reaching nearly USD 7 billion in 2025, while international public finance commitments for emerging economies reached approximately USD 3.3 billion by Q1 2026, financing strategy has become a critical factor in moving hydrogen projects from concept to final investment decision (FID).

Participants will learn how to assess hydrogen project economics, CAPEX/OPEX, cost of capital, revenue models, financial risks, creditworthiness, technology risk, policy risk, market risk, currency exposure, and offtake bankability. The training also explores public-private partnerships, development finance institutions (DFIs), multilateral development banks (MDBs), concessional finance, guarantees, insurance, green bonds, sustainability-linked finance, equity, debt, export finance, and blended-finance structures. These capabilities are especially relevant as the hydrogen sector faces persistent challenges involving high costs, uncertain demand, regulatory complexity, infrastructure gaps, and insufficient firm offtake commitments.

Course Modules

Module 1: Hydrogen Investment Landscape and Market Outlook

Global hydrogen value chains, green hydrogen, low-emissions hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives.
Major investment markets, emerging hubs and international hydrogen corridors.
Investment drivers
Current market barriers including cost, demand uncertainty, infrastructure and regulatory risk.
Case Study: Using the IEA Global Hydrogen Review 2026 to assess investment momentum, including the nearly USD 7 billion invested in low-emissions hydrogen projects in 2025.

Module 2: Hydrogen Project Economics and Financial Feasibility

Understanding CAPEX, OPEX, LCOH, utilisation rates and electricity-cost sensitivity.
Modelling renewable electricity, electrolyser efficiency, water, storage and transportation costs.
Revenue modelling for hydrogen, ammonia, e-fuels and industrial applications.
Sensitivity and scenario analysis for electricity prices, utilisation and hydrogen prices.
Case Study: Comparing the economics of an electrolyser project under different renewable-power and utilisation scenarios.

Module 3: Project Finance and Bankability

Principles of non-recourse and limited-recourse project finance.
Building a bankable project structure from development through FID and financial close.
Debt-service coverage, leverage, tenor, repayment profiles and lender requirements.
Allocation of construction, technology, operational and market risks.
Case Study: Designing a bankability framework for a utility-scale green hydrogen project seeking commercial debt.

Module 4: Capital Structures and Financing Instruments

Equity, senior debt, mezzanine finance and strategic-investor participation.
Blended finance, concessional finance, guarantees and credit enhancement.
Green bonds, sustainability-linked finance and climate-investment structures.
Role of MDBs, DFIs, export-credit agencies and institutional investors.
Case Study: Building a blended-finance capital stack combining sponsor equity, concessional funding and commercial debt.

Module 5: Offtake, Contracts and Revenue Bankability

Hydrogen offtake agreements and their role in securing project revenues.
Long-term contracts, pricing mechanisms, volume commitments and credit quality.
Demand aggregation and industrial-cluster models.
Assessing counterparty, volume, price and termination risks.
Case Study: Evaluating an industrial hydrogen offtake agreement and determining whether it provides sufficient revenue certainty for lenders. Firm offtakes remain a major challenge: only around one-fifth of new low-emissions hydrogen offtake volumes signed in 2025 were firmly contracted.

Module 6: Risk Management and Investment Decision-Making

Technology, construction, operational, market, policy and regulatory risk assessment.
Currency, interest-rate, inflation and commodity-price exposure.
Guarantees, insurance, warranties and contractual risk allocation.
Investment committees, due diligence and risk-adjusted returns.
Case Study: Creating a hydrogen project risk matrix and mitigation plan for an emerging-market development.

Module 7: ESG, Climate Finance and Sustainable Hydrogen

ESG due diligence and sustainable-investment principles.
Carbon intensity, hydrogen certification and environmental-performance requirements.
Climate finance, green investment criteria and sustainable taxonomies.
Social impact, local content, jobs, infrastructure and community considerations.
Case Study: Structuring an investment proposal for an African hydrogen project that links hydrogen development with industrialisation, electricity access and broader development objectives. The IEA identifies blended finance, guarantees and insurance as important tools for reducing financing costs in African hydrogen projects.

Module 8: Investment Strategy, Financial Modelling and FID

Developing an integrated hydrogen financial model and investment memorandum.
Investor presentations, financial due diligence and lender information requirements.
Investment returns, NPV, IRR, payback and scenario analysis.
FID readiness, financial close and post-investment monitoring.
Case Study: Preparing an end-to-end investment case for a hypothetical green-hydrogen-and-ammonia project and presenting the recommendation to an investment committee.
